Free Caregiver Movie Tickets: What California Theaters Actually Offer This Holiday Season

The holidays bring the year’s biggest movies, and for many families a trip to the theater is one of the few outings everyone can enjoy together. If you are a caregiver, you may have heard that you can get in free when you go with the person you care for.

We checked. No major chain in California publishes a guaranteed free ticket for caregivers, and federal law does not require one. Some theaters will still let a companion in free if you ask, and there are real ways to make a holiday movie cheaper and easier. This guide covers what is guaranteed, what to ask for, and where the actual savings are, based on each chain’s own website as of October 1, 2026.

The short answer on free caregiver tickets

The law guarantees seats, not free admission. The federal ADA ticketing rules require theaters to sell wheelchair spaces and up to three companion seats next to them, priced no higher than other seats in the same section. Nothing in those rules requires a free ticket for a caregiver or personal care attendant.

Regal is the only major chain with a written policy. Regal’s Help Center says guests attending in an assistant or companion role for a guest with a disability “may be passed in by management.” That word “may” matters: it is the manager’s call, not a right.

AMC does not publish a companion policy.

Flag: AMC

We could not find a free caregiver or companion ticket policy anywhere on AMC's website as of October 1, 2026. Its Assistive Moviegoing pages cover wheelchair and companion seating, captioning, and audio description, and its help center returns no results for "companion," "caregiver," or "disability."

Some managers may still let a companion in free. That is a local courtesy, not a published policy, so ask before you buy instead of counting on it.

Cinemark and Cinépolis mention wheelchair spaces and companion seating on their accessibility pages but say nothing about free companion admission.

Worth knowing

If you have read online about a card that gets a carer into the movies free, that is most likely the CEA Card, a program for cinemas in the United Kingdom. It does not work at U.S. theaters, and there is no U.S. equivalent we could find.

How to ask for a companion pass

Because it is up to each theater, the best approach is simply to ask, politely and before you pay.

  1. Call the theater ahead of time or ask at the box office, not the online checkout. Discretionary passes are handled in person.
  2. Explain that you are there to assist a guest with a disability, and ask whether the theater offers a companion pass.
  3. Ask for a manager if the person at the counter isn’t sure. At Regal, the written policy puts the decision with management.
  4. If the answer is no, buy two regular tickets and use the discount days below to keep the cost down.

What to say

"Hi, I'm here with [name], who has a disability. I'm their caregiver and I'm here to assist them during the movie. Does this theater offer a companion pass for caregivers?"

Ask for a manager if the box office isn't sure. You don't need to share a diagnosis to ask, and if the answer is no, you can still buy two tickets at the regular price.

What every theater has to give you

Whatever happens with the ticket price, these are on the table at the big chains:

  • Wheelchair spaces with companion seating. Under the ADA rules, you can buy up to three companion seats in the same row next to a wheelchair space.
  • Accessible seats priced like the rest. A wheelchair space can’t cost more than other tickets in the same section.
  • Captioning and audio devices. AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and Cinépolis all list closed-captioning devices and assistive listening or audio description, though not every location has every device.
  • Service animals. Cinépolis’s FAQ, for example, welcomes trained service animals (not emotional support animals).

Worth knowing: buying seats

Buy the wheelchair space and companion seats in one order so they print together. Federal ADA rules let you buy up to three companion seats in the same row next to a wheelchair space, at the same price as other seats in that section.

AMC says some wheelchair spaces may still be available when a show looks sold out online, so call or ask at the box office.

Sensory-friendly showings

These showings keep the lights up and the sound down, and nobody minds if someone talks, moves around, or needs a break.

  • AMC Sensory Friendly Films: the second and fourth Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. for family films, and the second and fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a wider range of films, at participating theaters.
  • Regal My Way Matinee: the first show of the day on select Saturdays each month at participating theaters. Regal’s website listed 17 participating California locations as of October 1, 2026, from the Sacramento area to San Diego County.

Where the real savings are

There is no special disability discount at the big chains, but the discount days are steep, and they work for both of you.

  • AMC: 50% off the adult evening base price on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, all day, for members of AMC Stubs. The basic Insider membership is free. Premium-format surcharges, fees, and tax aren’t discounted.
  • Cinemark Discount Tuesdays: up to 50% off at participating theaters, open to all guests. Cinemark’s free Movie Rewards membership gets the best Tuesday price.
  • Regal Value Days: discounted tickets on Tuesdays for members. Regal Rewards is Regal’s free loyalty program.
  • Laemmle (L.A. area): seniors 62 and up pay $6 for films starting before 6 p.m. on weekdays at Laemmle Playhouse 7. Check other Laemmle locations for their pricing.
  • The Roxie (San Francisco): $5 tickets with an EBT/SNAP card.

Flag: holiday blackout dates

Cinemark's Discount Tuesdays page says the deal will not run on 11/24, 12/22, and 12/29. It does not print the year, but all three dates fall on a Tuesday in 2026, and two of them land in the middle of holiday break. Check the date before you plan around the discount.

Worth knowing: EBT card holders

The Roxie in San Francisco runs a pilot called Movies for All: $5 tickets for anyone with an EBT/SNAP card, one ticket per cardholder. Since June 2019, people on SSI in California can also get CalFresh (the state's SNAP program), so many IHSS households already carry an EBT card.

For IHSS providers: movie time and your timesheet

Many caregivers reading this are paid IHSS providers, so one point needs to be clear.

Flag: IHSS hours

Taking someone to a movie is not an IHSS service. State rules limit IHSS accompaniment to medical appointments and to sites where alternative resources provide services, and they exclude social activities.

Our reading: tasks you are already authorized for, such as help using the restroom, are still IHSS tasks wherever they happen. Sitting through the film is not. If you are unsure what counts, ask your county social worker before you put it on a timesheet.

Before you go

A little planning makes the day easier:

Before you go

  • Pick a discount day (Tuesday, or Wednesday at AMC) and join the chain's free loyalty program first
  • Book the wheelchair space and companion seats together, online or by phone
  • Choose a sensory-friendly showing if loud sound or dark rooms are hard
  • Call ahead and ask whether the theater offers a companion pass
  • Ask for captioning, assistive listening, or audio description devices at the box office
  • Bring an ID if you plan to borrow a device (some theaters hold one as a deposit)
  • Pack any medication, snacks, or supplies needed for a medical reason
